Replaced GoHighLevel Native SMS with Custom SMS provider

Every business has its own way of communicating with customers, and sometimes the tools available out of the box just aren’t enough.

That was exactly the situation when one of our clients from Australia reached out to us.

He was already using GoHighLevel (GHL) to manage customer conversations, but there was one problem. The SMS providers supported by GHL didn’t fit his business requirements, and he wanted to use a Custom SMS provider that matches his specific business requirement instead. Besides being a better fit, it also helped reduce messaging costs.

The catch? GoHighLevel doesn’t allow you to plug in a custom SMS provider directly.

The client wasn’t looking for a workaround that required switching between multiple platforms. He wanted everything to continue working inside GoHighLevel, just as it always had—but with Custom SMS handling the messaging behind the scenes.

The Challenges

To make that happen, we needed to solve a few technical challenges:

  • Connect Custom SMS with GoHighLevel, even though there’s no native integration.
  • Make sure users can send and receive SMS without leaving the GHL Conversations tab.
  • Allow different GoHighLevel locations to connect their own CustomSMS accounts.
  • Keep inbound messages, delivery reports, and message statuses synced automatically.
  • Handle large volumes of SMS without running into API rate limits.
  • Simplify phone number purchasing and assignment for each location.
  • Give administrators visibility into balances, messaging activity, and account management from one place.

Our Approach

Rather than trying to force Custom SMS into GoHighLevel, we built a custom integration layer that sits between the two platforms.

Whenever a user sends an SMS from GoHighLevel, the message is securely routed through our system to Custom SMS. When a customer replies, that message is instantly pushed back into GoHighLevel, so conversations stay in sync without users noticing anything happening in the background.

We also built an admin portal that makes it easy to connect new GoHighLevel locations, link Custom SMS accounts, manage phone numbers, monitor balances, and keep everything running smoothly.

From the user’s perspective, nothing changed—they still work inside GoHighLevel. Behind the scenes, however, the entire SMS infrastructure is powered by a custom solution built specifically for their business.
